They aim to reduce energy costs with energy-efficient equipment and lighting and with energy-efficient approaches to construction and renovation.

The White River Partnership, a Royalton-based non-profit, will host the first landscape auction in the United States on August 14, 2010 at Vermont Technical College in Randolph Center. A landscape auction is a live auction that allows individuals, groups, and businesses to “adopt” elements of a landscape in need of conservation. The White River Partnership is using the landscape auction mechanism to help conserve the working landscape in the White River watershed.

The conference begins at Vermont Law School at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 15 with the keynote address by Andrew Koppelman, a professor of law and political science at Northwestern University. His address, "Careful with that Gun: The New (?) Arguments Against Marriage Equality," explores how religious conservatives have retooled their opposition to same-sex marriage. Take Back the Night

In conjunction with a series of events in April for Sexual Assault Prevention Month, members of the VLS and greater South Royalton community are invited to stand out against sexual violence and recognize survivors. Participants will hold candles and survivors will be invited to participate in a healing fire ceremony (town permits pending). Tracy Penfield, of SafeArt in Chelsea, will offer words of healing and advocacy, and participants will then have a chance to share their own reflections. Following the ceremony, the Women's Law Group and the Law Students for Reproductive Justice invite participants to a hot beverage reception on the VLS campus. Participants are also invited to plant a Survivor's Flag on the campus Quad. This event is free and open to the public.

Benefit Concert Ticket Sales

Sexual Assault Prevention Month-Survivor Flag Week

In conjunction with a series of events in April for Sexual Assault Prevention Month, members of the VLS community are invited to plant their own flag to signify their personal experiences as survivors of sexual violence or to recognize the experience of a friend or loved one. Sponsored by the Women's Law Group and Law Students for Reproductive Justice, this week-long event will create a visual symbol to demonstrate the prevalence and impact of sexual violence among members of our own community as we learn to be advocates for others in the community and the world. On Wednesday, April 14, we will have a Take Back the Night Candlelight Vigil and Healing Fire ceremony on the South Royalton green, where participants will be invited to the campus to plant flags.

The Student Animal Legal Defense Fund (SALDF) presents this workshop where participants may learn the "anatomy" of a cruelty case: elements of a criminal investigation. How does a cruelty investigation start? Who should be involved? How does it evolve through our criminal justice system? There will also be an overview of local, state, and federal laws and regulations that apply to animal cases. You will also learn what is needed to make a winnable case. Learn what resources are available here in Vermont and beyond to assist with animal cruelty investigations. Included in the discussion will be an update on Vermont's state-wide Cruelty Response System and an overview of the Humane Society of the United State's First Strike campaign, which focuses on the link between animal cruelty and human violence. Speakers include Kathryn Smith, deputy state's attorney, Rutland County State's Attorney's Office; Janet Carini DVM, owner, Rutland Veterinary Clinic at Castleton; Joanne Bourbeau, senior state director, Humane Society of the United States. The Vermont Supreme Court will travel to Vermont Law School on March 17, 2010, to hear oral arguments in six cases. The arguments will begin at 9:30 a.m. The public is invited to attend.

Cases on the Court's docket will consider: whether the Vermont Consumer Fraud Act is violated when a car dealer relies on a mistakenly issued clean car title and does not independently inspect the vehicle to determine whether it is salvaged or rebuilt; whether a Clean Water Act permit violates the statutory five-year limitation on permits when it relies exclusively upon data that is more than five years old; what constitutes an intent to abandon residency in another state and establish residency in Vermont; what constitutes attempted voyeurism and when such a jury instruction can be given; whether the prosecution must turn over internal validation studies from DNA labs and whether it violates due process and equal protection to charge aggravated murder rather than felony murder in those instances where the elements of each crime are the same; and whether a judge can contact a pharmacy and ask about the side effects of a drug that a defendant claims is preventing him from attending his trial.

Want to Hear the Inside Scoop on COP15?
These international negotiations were unprecedented in many ways, including the largest ever number of heads of state, NGOs, and overall participants, as well as the most intense showing of passion by demonstrators both inside and outside the doors of the convention center. VLS students and faculty had front row seats for witnessing the highs and lows of the climate negotiations. For instance, they saw the lead scientists at the IPCC describe the alarming results of the most recent climate studies, which show the situation is much worse than they had predicted just a few years ago. They saw how the tiny island nation of Tuvalu stood up to world powers and insisted that the negotiations shift toward a path that would protect them from imminent destruction. They heard vulnerable low-lying and impoverished nations pleading for assistance with adaptation measures to help them address the burgeoning humanitarian crisis already underway as a result of climate change. And, they saw the deadlock between the U.S., China, and other countries that stood in the way of achieving an ambitious, fair, and legally binding agreement that so many voices were demanding. On the other hand, the VLS contingent was heartened to see the overwhelming determination of NGOs, youth groups, and community leaders from both northern and southern countries who vowed to keep the pressure on world leaders in the coming months. The evening includes a traditional Jewish sabbath meal (kosher, meat, and vegetarian options) complete with all the traditional celebrations. In addition, October 2nd is the first night of Sukkot (Feast of Tabernacles, sometimes equated as the Jewish version of Thanksgiving), which also has a large environmental theme. Waterman Lecture: Leonard S. Spector, Deputy Director of Center for Nonproliferation Studies

The Fall 2009 Waterman Lecture is "Slowing Proliferation: Why Legal Tools Matter," a talk by Leonard S. Spector, deputy director of the Monterey Institute of International Studies' James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS), and heads its Washington, D.C. office. He serves as editor-in-chief of the center's publications. Mr. Spector formerly worked with the U.S. Department of Energy as an assistant deputy administrator for arms control and nonproliferation at the National Nuclear Security Administration. He has also served as senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and director of its Nuclear Nonproliferation Project, and as chief counsel to the U.S. Senate Energy and Proliferation Subcommittee, where he assisted in drafting the Nuclear Nonproliferation Act and the Nuclear Waste Policy Act.

The Sterry R. Waterman lecture is named in honor of the late senior judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and a former president of the Vermont Law School Board of Trustees.

11th Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner

VLS hosts the South Royalton traditional community Thanksgiving dinner. Community businesses, organizations, and citizens donate food, goods, and services to make this event possible. Join volunteers preparing and serving food, delivering meals to the homebound, or just enjoy a holiday meal among friends.

The dinner will be served in the Chase Community Center beginning at 11:30 a.m., with meals for the homebound packaged earlier in the morning in the Café.

Volunteers are needed at the United Church of South Royalton (on the Green) Monday and Tuesday between 1:00 and 7:00 p.m. to help prepare the stuffing, squash, and potatoes; on Thursday at the Café between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to pack and coordinate the dinners to go, and beginning at 10:00 a.m. to deliver meals.

Cranberry sauce and pies may be donated and delivered November 24-26 from 8:30-2:00 p.m. in the Café.

Come join us for a run along the scenic White River. The course is mostly flat and passes through beautiful meadows in this picturesque valley. Vermont Law School proudly sponsors this race as a fund raiser for the Jonathon Chase Memorial Scholarship, to assist students pursuing careers in public interest law. The Chase Race was started in 1988 to honor the memory of Jonathon B. Chase, a former dean of Vermont Law School and an avid runner.

The race events include a 15K solo run (certified course), 10M team relay, and a 4M walk.

This event is a fund raiser for the Student Animal Legal Defense Fund (SALDF) and the Annual Animal Law Conference in Oregon in October. Come by to learn about local vets and animal-friendly shops, get your dog cleaned up at the by-donation dog wash, and if you're hungry and thirsty, give us 3 bucks and enjoy sandwiches and delicious Harpoon Beer. Bread and Puppet

The VLS chapter of the National Lawyer's Guild presents this politically and socially aware "street theater" performance of the Bread and Puppet Theater from Glover, Vermont, as part of disOrientation week events. The B&P Theater describes the show-- "The Sourdough Philosophy Circus is about the need for human fermentation. Human fermentation concerns those parts of the human body that are not governed by the government, like the guts and the gutsy parts of the brain. This is also applies to dancing zebras and turkeys and free range cows. The show is run by a bunch of cooks, specialists in cooking the various stews and pancakes of our everyday first world existence. Additonal commentary is provided by the Rotten Idea Theater Company. Music is by the Sourdough Philosophy Brass Band."

This performance is free and open to the public. All ages welcome.

Employee Wellness Fair

Outside in Vermont

Workshops, panel discussions, a photo contest, and activities will focus on different aspects of enjoying Vermont, such as things to do, interesting places to visit, and information about the local ecology. Cosponsored by student groups including the Student Bar Association, the Environmental Law Society, Mountaineers, Campus Greening Committee, and Campus Tree. All events are free and open to the public. Saturday's events begin with breakfast at 8:30 a.m., followed by 9:30 a.m. How-To Workshops, 10:30 a.m Endangered Species Panel, then a noontime lunch, followed by Vermont info tables and photo contest results.

Hike with the Dean
